A Gnome and a Tiefling

After a long period of postponing, I'm once again buried amidst the genesis of a new fantastic world. This time I'm aiming for a role playing game that will be able to be scheduled more freely between people who have rooms to remodel, rugrats to rear, or some other aspect of this strange meta-game they call "Life" to tend to.

Since it dawned to me this is also a nice opportunity to explore the new Dungeons and Dragons 4th edition, I'm exploring the heroes and monsters that inhabits it's worlds.

At first sight I liked the tiefling for yes, hot demoness booty, but you've got to love that gnome. "Who's my minion? Who's my minion?"

Also: the Demogorgon and the Gnomethe Beholder, the Red Dragon

Very nice promotional material indeed, but I find the game lacking. It's too much of a MMORPG clone and too little tabletop RPG for my tastes. Or: too much emphasis on combat, powers, and treasure, and not enough on behind-the-crunch character development and inter-character relationships.

Not a bad game, mind you. It's fun when you want an evening of hack-and-slash with a LAN feel to it. Other than that: Meh.

Hey Wim,

Haven't played it yet myself, so I have to reserve my opinion for now.

On first glance I like the fact that non-magic classes have more interesting options. I don't like the treasure and action points, so I'm going to drop them from my first game.

I think character development and role playing itself can never really be captured in rules. It is better suited to add as players and GM, whether that is on DnD 4e or somethin else (although some rpg's like Bliss Stage do a good attempt at encouraging it)
